Title:Potential License Requirements for customers who Import Aircraft Fire Extinguishers containing Halon

April 10, 2013 - Aircraft fire extinguishers may contain halon or halon blends (“Halons”). While the manufacture of Halons has been largely prohibited for several years, Halons are allowed for the purpose of aviation fire protection. Halons are effective for extinguishing fire and as an explosion suppression agent that is electrically non-conductive and leaves no residue. As such, Halons are valuable for aircraft fire suppression systems. However, the import, export, use, and disposal of Halons is highly regulated.

If you plan to import fire extinguishing systems containing Halon for use on your aircraft, you may be required to apply for an import Ozone Depleting Substance (ODS) license, or similar approval or permission, from your local or State authority before any importation can be made. Prior to ordering fire suppression equipment containing Halons, you should review and determine the requirements and regulations that apply to you and the location where you plan to import such equipment. You may need to contact your State government licensing authorities well in advance of your order to help you obtain the proper license in your jurisdiction and comply with all applicable requirements.

Imports of fire suppression equipment containing Halons from other countries without the proper license, approval, or permission, may result in serious penalties, including fines and loss of the import license.

Please note that Bombardier is not responsible for obtaining the import license for fire suppression systems containing Halons and is not liable if you are unable or delayed in your efforts to obtain the license, approval, or other permission from your government or other applicable local enforcement agencies for your intended importation of fire suppression systems containing Halons.
